Gene Therapy Account Manager
Location: Chicago, IL, US
This position reports directly into the US Head of Market Access as part of the Access Value and Evidence Strategy (AVES) team but will frequently interact with the Head of US Field, Commercial. The Gene Therapy Account Manager will work collaboratively with Gene Therapy Product Specialists and key referral accounts as well as leadership within Field teams, Government Affairs, Marketing, Commercial Operations and other cross functional partners. This role will be the principle owner of Qualified Treatment Center’s relationship with bluebird and is responsible for ensuring operational access to bluebird’s gene therapy products. You will also engage with regional payers to ensure understanding, awareness and coverage for bluebird’s gene therapy products.
External Strategic Partnerships
Identifies, develops, and manages strategic relationships with regional payers, within assigned geography to ensure appropriate and timely access to bluebird’s gene therapy products.
Works collaboratively with National Account Managers and Government Affairs to have a holistic view of the reimbursement environment surrounding the Qualified Treatment Center.
Builds service-focused relationship with Qualified Treatment Centers by maintaining accuracy and continuity of information between bluebird, regional referral sites and central Qualified Treatment Centers. Ensure launch readiness in Qualified Treatment Centers.
Plans and facilitates bluebird cross functional team member introductions and engagement with Qualified Treatment Center staff.
Internal Cross Functional Partnerships
Responsibility for communicating details of relevant coverage policies to the broader team for assessment and action planning.
Leads coordination between cross functional business partners around Qualified Treatment Centers.
Facilitates communication between regional plans, Qualified Treatment Centers, and the bluebird reimbursement support team on existing and potential coverage issues to ensure a timely and effective resolution.
Works in partnership with local Gene Therapy Product Specialists to understand gene therapy referral networks for interfacing with the Qualified Treatment Centers.
Collaborates with Gene Therapy Product Specialists to create and implement pull through initiatives on payer trends, reimbursement changes and billing requirements that will affect bluebird gene therapy product utilization.
Market Access and Value
Accurately delivers bluebird’s gene therapy products clinical information and reimbursement information to support access to bluebird’s portfolio.
Assesses local payer landscape to understand potential coverage and/or coverage issues related to bluebird bio gene therapy products.
Partners with internal AVES team, medical affairs, and other appropriate individuals to ensure payers and other population-based decision makers have timely access to clinical, health economic, and outcomes research information.
Identifies and problem solves potential issues with value-based payment between payers, Qualified Treatment Centers, bluebird bio, and other relevant entities.
Gain coverage and negotiates for access of bluebird bio product commensurate with the value they deliver
Effectively communicates payer policies pertaining to bluebird’s gene therapy products and any competitive therapies to internal stakeholders.
Works with bluebird patient and reimbursement support services team to identify trends in coverage and make recommendations for solutions to address common issues.
Partners closely with the local team to understand and overcome reimbursement hurdles related to patient referrals.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred (Master’s Degree or MBA)
Minimum 7 years of experience in the biotechnology/specialty field sales environment; specialty or rare disease therapeutic experience, preferred
Demonstrated competency in all aspects of market access, reimbursement and coverage with sustained track record of achievement in regional payer management
Experience in working with regional payer decision-makers related to formulary processes, coverage, coding, billing and patient access to rare disease products/therapies
Understanding of hospital organizational/financial structure, patient flow, ordering and reimbursement processes within inpatient and outpatient care
Proven track record of negotiating coverage agreements that maintain relationships while supporting the access to patients
Strong relationship building skills applying a consultative approach to establish and sustain a strong network
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively present to and engage with a wide range of stakeholder audiences
Must be able to travel as needed throughout the area and to commercial meetings, approximately 60% of the time
