The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) will be responsible for integrating scientific expertise and product knowledge to ensure successful implementation of the Company's marketed and emerging product portfolio. This will be fulfilled mainly through the development of excellent working relationships with key opinion leaders and regional clinicians of influence. Additional leadership responsibilities in support of preferential team dynamics, special projects and key customer interface.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

These may include but are not limited to:

  • Identify key national and regional oncology thought leaders and priority customers, build and maintain advocacy with these individuals, and function as their primary scientific contact with Halozyme

  • Assist in the identification, evaluation and engagement of potential investigators for Halozyme clinical trials

  • Assist the clinical trials team, as needed, in the ongoing support and communication with investigators on Halozyme corporate trials

  • Identify, initiate, coordinate, evaluate and monitor investigator-sponsored studies intended to support the clinical and scientific strategy of Halozyme products

  • Develop and manage to timelines for publication plans of investigator-sponsored studies

  • Participate in the collection and exchange of scientific/technical information important to Companies development efforts (serve as a field-based extension of the in-house clinical team)

  • Educate the priority customers on research and development projects

  • Develop key advocates as speakers to support Halozyme products and strategies

  • Assist in the development of, and participate in, regional advisory boards and medical education programs

  • Represent Halozyme at major oncology meetings and conferences, including meetings of the NCI Cooperative research groups

  • Maintain clinical and technical expertise in the area of oncology through review of the scientific literature and attendance at key scientific meetings

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and maintain Territory Plans associated with Halozyme Goals

  • Leads assigned projects with MSL Organization (exp. Payer group presentations, Provides Scientific intelligence)

  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Minimum of a Master of Science degree with 8 years of experience (an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered)

  • Previous experience as an MSL and at least 5 years industry experience in a therapeutic area are required

  • Ability to efficiently manage time and priorities

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to compile and disseminate information to others in a cohesive fashion to assure a clear understanding of project status and direction

  • Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with thought leaders and to establish trust through the consistent demonstration of scientific expertise and satisfactory follow-through to requests from thought-leaders; the ability to work effectively with key decision makers, both within and outside the Company

  • Excellent communicator, skilled at diplomacy and capable of effectively combining science and relationship building.

  • Ability to understand and translate external customer and/or internal client needs into effective decisions and to drive results and strive for continuous improvement with high performance in the face of adversity a must

  • Patient care clinical experience in the therapeutic area (including sub-specialty) preferred

  • Advanced degree in medical science (MD, PharmD, or PhD) is strongly preferred


TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Equipment: PC, scanners, facsimile machine, voice mail and e-mail systems, and common office machines, or ability to be trained. Knowledge of other equipment required: NA

Software Knowledge: Windows, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Knowledge of other software required: NA

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Interface at leadership level with cross-functional colleagues in all relevant functions including clinical development, clinical operations, regulatory, managed markets, commercial, legal, finance etc.

  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with Key Opinion Leaders

EFFORT REQUIRED/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Physical Activities: On a continuous basis, sit at desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means. Some walking and lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
